UCSD (University of California at San Diego): The days of smoking on the chain are to many. A recent study by the University of California at San Diego estimates the prevalence of heavy smoking, defined here as a pack a day, has declined dramatically over the past 40 years.
Researchers attribute this decline in part to cigarette taxes.
It's not just that smokers quit or reduce.
It seems the younger generations have changed their smoking habits.
Last year, a study by the University of Michigan found the decline in smoking among teenagers has reached a plateau and has proposed to teenagers may be lighting more often.
Whether one or 20 cigarettes per day, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the country.
According to the Centers for Disease Control on 21-percent of adults in this country are smokers.
