B Rengarajoo Associates: The charred body, believed to be that of a woman, was found when a team of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers were hosing down the unit in the Afro Asia Building in Robinson Road.

The affected office is said to be occupied by law firm B. Rengarajoo & Associates, managed by a husband-and-wife team. Adjacent units were unaffected.

Shortly after they were alerted, police closed three surrounding roads - McCallum Street, Boon Tat Link and Maxwell Link - to vehicular traffic. Almost all lanes were accessible again by 2.30pm.

Office workers in the building, which houses legal and trading firms, were said to have evacuated the building shortly after the fire broke out.

One of them, architect Setyadi Ongkowidjaja, 54, whose office is on the same level, said that the corridor was engulfed in smoke as he made his way downstairs.

"Everything was black. I managed to find the exit (only) by using my hands to feel the walls," he said.

Other office workers nearby said they heard the sound of glass shattering. The building is one of the oldest in the area. SCDF said it is investigating the cause of the fire and the death. By AsiaOne
