National Day Awards 2011:Singapore celebrates its 46th National Day on Tuesday, and several observance ceremonies were held on Monday to mark the occasion. Chan Heng Chee, ambassador at the Singapore embassy in Washington and prominent banker Wee Cho Yaw, UOB Group chairman are the recipients of this year’s highest National Day Awards  the Distinguished Service Order.

Chan Heng Chee also received Singapore’s Meritorious Service Medal, the highest National Day Award conferred in August, 2005. The annual awards recognise those who have made outstanding contributions in public service or community work in Singapore.

76-years old , Wee Cho Yaw is the incumbent Chairman of the United Overseas Bank Group (UOB), one of the leading financial institutions in Asia, providing a wide-ranging services in finance, supported by its global network of branches and associates. And this year, 3,010 individuals are being honoured, Channel News Asia reports.

Colonel Alvin Kek, Chairman NDP 2011 Executive Committee said, “As we celebrate 46 years of nation-building, we should reflect on how the Singapore Spirit, which is characterised by unity and trust as well as our ‘can-do’ mentality, has enabled us to achieve so much in such a short span of time.”
